NEWS

We are thrilled to announce the release of WE ARE ONLY RIDERS! From Glitterhouse Records:

This album is a miracle. One which returns one faith. Very briefly, the history that has to be necessarily related: a certain Tony Chmelik worked in a London record store near the apartment of the Gun Club singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Together, they listened to by old blue plates, from which arose a friendship and a record project: Ramblin Jeffrey Lee & Crypress Grove With Willie Love. Tony Chmelik is Cypress Grove and as he was clearing out his attic a few years ago, he found a tape with jams and song sketches of the master.

Too crude to publish them, but good enough to use them as a base and in the spirit of Jeffrey Lee's complete it. What followed was three years of hard work. Old companions and self-confessed admirer of Pierce were contacted, favors demanded, handles cleaned, begged and asked. The result is We Are Only Riders. And it has more than paid off.

Nick Cave is the opener with an animated Ramblin 'Mind, Jeffrey Lee's guitar track was retained, while Kid Congo Powers, Barry Adamson, Mick Harvey, and others. Unquestionably one of the best Cave songs for a long time. Next, the inimitable Mark Lanegan growls through Constant walking and give the Raveonettes Free To Walk with Jesus & Mary Chain memorial anthem. Lucky Jim, the only one already known JLP song on this album, wins in the version of Debbie Harry even more depth. Nick Cave sits at the piano. Chris Stein plays the guitar. Even Lydia Lunch has on We Are Only three very strong riders like vocal performances, When I Get My Cadillac is a lysergic acid-contaminated acoustic song with Kid Congo Powers at ambient guitar.

The following is the second version of Ramblin Mind of David Eugene Edwards placed very close to the early 16 Horsepower masterpieces - devilishly good! The Sadies also offer Constant Waiting and it fits the Ghosttown sound perfect for her predecessor. Free To Walk (you remember the Raveonettes) sounds in the version of Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell, of course, quite different, charming, front-porchy the same time very deep!

A few surprises, we do not want to reveal, for example The two songs by Crippled Black Phoenix (one) with David Eugene Edwards on vocals, the songs of Cypress Grove and Mick Harvey, the touching duet between Nick Cave and Debbie Harry and Johnny Dowd's contribution. This must be heard. The album closes with a simple ensemble designated group of friends to make with Walkin Down The Street (Doin My Thing) again massively clear that they are here with heart and soul into it. A Monstertrip of a song, with an extremely strong and powerful Lydia Lunch Gitarrensalven of Dave Alvin (knew not at that who has a wah pedal). A frenetic finale of a miracle plant. We are grateful. A beautiful double vinyl edition will appear in January 2010. Until then, the CD. And that is better than I have described. (rh)

The premiere of the Gun Club movie, "Ghost on the Highway" was a great success late June at the Don't Knock the Rock Festival in Los Angeles. Just as exciting was the Gun Club Tribute/Reunion that took place - here's a clip with Dante Aliano from Starlite Desperation doing Preachin' the Blues and the brilliant Chris D of the Flesheaters doing She's Like Heroin (a song he'd been doing in the Flesheaters recently). Please see trailer below!

Please email for enquiries on screening this movie in your town! We hope for a dvd release eventually so stay tuned!

As many of you know, Jeffery Lee Pierce had become a believer of the Buddhist religion prior to his death, and that his remains are kept at the West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple on Corrinth Ave. March 5 was the monthly reading of names for those souls that over the years have passed on during the month of March. The memorial service was attended by JLP's sister Jacqui and his mother Margie. During the ceremony Jeffrey's name was read aloud, and his family burned incense in his memory.

In Honor of the 10th Anniversary of Jeffrey's passing, Jaqui Pierce(Jeffrey's Sis) and others have begun preparations for a Memorial Show. Friends and Performers alike will be gathering to celebrate the memory and musical legacy that JLP left behind. FRIDAY MARCH 31st, 2006 At The Scene in Glendale, CA Scheduled to perform... The Leaving Trains, Flash Express, The Guilty Hearts and other surprise guests.... More details to follow or check http://www.thescenebar.com/ for more information.

Also on the 10 year anniversary of his death, a tribute to the great Jeffrey Lee Pierce is being held at Annies Social Club San Francisco Fri. April 7th in San Francisco http://www.myspace.com/anniessocialclub Bad America (featuring Eric M., Pat Toves and Biff O'Hara) Blag and Salt Peter of The Dwarves, Chuck Prophet, and Stephanie Finch, Mark Eitzel of the American Music Club, Tom Heyman, The Bellyachers, The Parish Corey Porter and many more!

Please email us if you know of or want to arrange a tribute in your town!

On November 14th, 2005, the first two editions of the new compilation series: 9 Lives of the GUN CLUB was released. Launching the series was the debut solo-album of Jeffrey Lee Pierce: Wildweed from 1985, and the Gun Club album Lucky Jim from 1993. Both editions contain never before released material on CD, while Lucky Jim also contains a bonus CD of previously unreleased studio recordings and several over-the-top live performances.

9 LIVES is a project of the Dutch record company Flow Records in collaboration with the Dutch agency Alternative: Willem Venema. Each edition is part of a compilation series of 9 CDs of Jeffrey Lee Pierce & the Gun Club, and will contain re-mastered and re-mixed versions of recordings exclusive to these reissues. To most of the re-releases in the series unique bonus material (studio, live - and outtakes) has been added. Once, in biting circumstances in 1996, while Jeffrey was recuperating from Hepatitis C at his father's home in Utah, he suffered a brain aneurysm, fell into a coma, and passed away shortly after at the age of 37 in a Salt Lake City hospital.

The 9 editions (partly double CDs) feature remixing and re-mastering by Peer Rave (a.o. producer of Henry Rollins and the albums Lucky Jim and Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee). Over the next one and a half years, every three months a new re-release will follow, in special packaging with liner notes, and pages of unique photos. Also includes material made available with the permission of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's estate. The conclusion of the series is to be released in Spring 2007. The safe-deposit was filled with boxes of master tapes, including the recordings of the last tour in Europe. There are also ongoing plans to organize a tribute tour in Europe together with several musicians (probably with the original band members) in Spring 2006.

Photographer Theresa Kereakes writes...

"I just wanted to thank those of you who visited my website to look at it. I was checking my site statistics and my eyes popped out at the visits I had received the past few days. Thanks! That photo was taken backstage at the Whisky A Go Go at a B-Girls show. Just about everyone in LA showed up for that. B-Girl Cynthia Ross was dating Stiv Bators at the time... it was one of those nights where everyone had the same plans. Blondie members Debbie Harry and Nigel Harrison were there...super groupie Sabel Starr was there... Belinda Carlisle was there. Jeffrey had not yet formed any band at the time of this photo. Soon afterwards, he had a band with Anna Statman on bass. I shot photos at that show but I am so sorry to say that those photos never even got developed because my sister threw out the film (it was in the fridge). Anyway.... thanks again for checkin out the pix. It is the only photo I have of Jeffrey. I cherish this shot and its the way I like to remember him... before everything that did him in set in. When music wasa very hopeful and positive Dream." - Thanks for sharing this amazing photo, and experience!
