CYPRESS GROVE - guitarist on the Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee album

I have been in many bands over the years, but I am probably best known for my work with The Gun Club legend Jeffery Lee Pierce. In addition to making the blues album “Ramblin’ Jeffrey Lee and Cypress Grove with Willie Love” in 1992, Jeffrey and me toured together as a duet in 1994. It was in fact to be Jeffrey’s last ever tour.

We did a lot of stuff from the album, plus some Gun Club stuff and some other covers. Anyway, all the shows were recorded, and a live album of that final tour is coming out in February 2007. I get asked a lot of questions about what is happening with the album, so I thought here might be a good place to answer them! It is to be called “Spanish Flang Dang” and will feature performances from most of the shows. Me and Edwin (the tour manager) spent many hours listening to all the DAT’s, and think we have pretty much come up with the best stuff – although as always, opinions may differ on that. When me and Jeffrey started to demo the Ramblin’ album, we did so with an old friend of mine – Mike Suggate – who at the time had a pretty decent home studio set-up. Mike is well schooled in the art of production, and also happens to be something of a genius on the guitar. The three of us spent many, many hours in that home studio.

A lot of the early demo’s were of country Murder Ballads, because that is the way Jeffrey saw the album going in those days. Stuff like “Handsome Molly”, “Omi Wise”, and “Old Reuben”. Not all of these demos survived unfortunately, but at the rate we were working, that was inevitable. However Mike did discover recently in his loft, a finished mixed version of “Old Reuben” – with me on vocals! Jeffrey wanted me to sing that one, and for the life of me I can’t remember why. I imagine that he would have sung it if we had come to record it for the album. I hear that this demo is going to appear on the live album extras disc. You can hear an excerpt of this in my video section.

Another song that me and Jeffrey worked on a lot in my bedroom was Bukka White’s “Fixin’ to Die Blues.” We never got as far as a demo with this one because we could just never seem to get it right. In the end, neither of us were happy with it so we left it out. Anyway, some 15 years later, I seem to have worked it out, and have recorded it as my tribute to Jeffrey, along with my version of “Promise Me” – probably my all time favourite Gun Club song. Both these songs will be on the album.

In a nice piece of synchronicity, Mike accompanies me on these songs, which kind of brings things full circle. He was there at the very inception of the project, and is there at the end. Anyway, I will update you as and when I find stuff out. In the meantime, check out my video section for a few choice snippets of Jeffrey and me rehearsing, bits of demo’s and other assorted rarities. Actually, the visual bit of the video doesn’t seem to come out – not for me anyway, but perhaps I am missing some sort of plug-in widget. but it is only a still image in any case. The audio is there and that is the important thing. Stay well my friends!
